Happy Birthday 2 SADIE HAWKINS HO’DOWN @Aces&Eights 22.2.17
So proud to celebrate the one-year anniversary of SADIE HAWKINS HO’DOWN at Aces & Eights in Tufnell Park, London. Thrilled to headline our celebration as BITCHFORK
Bitchfork
Marianne Hyatt – deep Southern Songstress from Austin Texas. If you blinked you’ll have missed her as Richard Linklater’s ‘Late Night Pickup’ during his cult film ‘Slacker’. She has fronted Dragstripper, Temple of Sound, Anarchistwood and Country Dirt, which was once London’s hottest new grabass bluegrass C&W outfit since Gary P. Nunn came to town. She’s equal parts Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, and has sung with The Frogs at ATP, as well as with Bill Callahan during Meltdown Festival. She plays platonic lovesongs to sexworkers, country reggae odes to schizophrenic madames and protest tunes to natural disasters… Bitchfork: a walking triumph of lost causes & no-longer living legends.
“Country Dirt is London’s premier country+bluegrass band, fronted by Texas’s very own and very striking Marianne Hyatt” – Gary Crowley, BBC London
….adding aural shooting stars and neon fire to the roadhouse vibe –
Gavin Martin, The Mirror
Think Burrito Brothers’ dirty sister – Tim Perry, The Windmill
Hugo Martin
Who was the first person to ever write a song? No doubt some poor fool who got their heart broken. More to the point, was it any good? Probably not. Who was it who said that you have to write a hundred bad songs before you write a good one? Someone who has been down this path is Hugo Martin. Born in Syracuse, New York, Hugo’s lot was cast early on in his life when, as a baby, his father tragically died of a brain tumour. His grieving mother decided to move to London; Hugo has lived and worked there ever since. After teaching himself guitar in his late teens Hugo played and led a succession of bands, all facing the usual struggles. Along the way he has played guitar for such notables as Wreckless Eric and Robert Coyne. Ultimately though, it is in the last few years that he has found his voice as a writer culminating in his debut solo LP Six Before a Seven.
